Jackson asked:

Which is best for an inexpensive pair of binoculars

Bushnell 12x50 PermaFocus Focus-Free Wide-Angle Binocular
Sale Price: $56.49

Nikon 8x40 Action Ultra-Wide-View Binoculars
Sale Price: $64.69

Celestron UpClose 10-30x50 Zoom
Sale Price: $49.95

Reply:

If this is for astronomy, NONE of these is acceptable. The Bushnells are fixed focus somewhere this side of infinity, so everything in the sky will be out of focus. The Nikons have only a 40mm aperture, too small for astronomy. The Celestrons are zoom binoculars, which usually don't have good enough optics for astronomy.

Instead, I'd recommend Orion's Scenix 10x50 at $99.95, which have an excellent reputation:

If prescription medications this is too expensive, you might try Orion's new WorldView 10x50 at $79.95, but I've yet to see any reports on these:
