What do you think of this hunting story (below) that i wrote for a youth hunting memories contest?
It was my first year of hunting, and without a doubt, one I will never forget. I set my alarm clock for five, but my dad woke me up at four. His clock was set an hour early. He told me to go back to bed, but the excitement was too overwhelming.
When five o’clock came, we headed out. My stand was a fifteen-minute walk to the woods from my house. It was on the edge of the woods, overlooking a clover and alfalfa field. I climbed up, followed by my dad. We were only out there for an hour and a half when the first deer were spotted. Two doe and two fawns, about 150 yards away. It was still early in the morning, so I decided I would wait to see what else came along. Sure enough, something did.
At 9:15, a buck stood up from the Goldenrod. I looked through the binoculars, and it was a four pointer from what I could see. The buck walked to the edge of the field, turned, and walked over the ridge. We used a deer call, but it did not stop even for a second. I couldn’t get a clear shot, so I stuck to my ethics and waited a while longer. My dad assured me that it may be back later. We sat and watched a little while longer and then decided to go get breakfast.
My dad and I left the house again at 2:30 in the afternoon after a short nap. We hadn’t been out long when the buck showed up again. The same fawns and doe we had seen earlier came out again. The 4 pointer trailed behind them. He was walking down the ridge when my heart started racing. In my head, I went through things I learned at hunter’s safety. Is it safe? Yes. Is it legal? Yes. Is it ethical? Yes. I waited for the perfect moment to shoot. buy rx drugs without prescription I was able to get a broadside view as I picked up the gun, a .243 caliber bolt action, single shot rifle that my brother and sister used to get most of their deer. The adrenaline was pumping thought my veins faster than the speed of light. I took aim, and my dad told me to take my time. I pulled the trigger. The buck ran into the woods. We went out to look for blood, and I saw some at the spot where he entered the woods. It was frothy and pink. I knew right off that it was a lung shot. That was when I heard the thump.
My dad and I continued up the hill another 75 yards and that was when we saw it. I bagged a huge 4 pointer, and we both grinned ear to ear. We dragged it to the edge of the woods and I called my brother to come help us bring it back to the house. I helped my dad field dress it then we drove to some of my dad’s friends houses to show it to them. Joking, I asked if we were going to show it to the whole town. He said, “You don’t get a deer like this very often, so we have to put some mileage on it.” All of my dad’s friends were impressed and congratulated me on my buck. They all made estimates on how much it weighed. Some said 160 lbs., some said 170lbs., and a few said 180 lbs. However, there was only one way to find out. So, we headed to ______’s store in ______to weigh it.
My deer was at the top of the leader board weighing in at 206 lbs. Later as I was reading the youth hunting weekend section in the newspaper I saw my name somewhere I didn’t expect it to be. It read, “The honors for largest deer taken went to Jessica _____, who shot a 206-pound, 4 point buck in _______”.
Not only did I take pride in my deer, I valued the father-daughter time. As a Christmas present, my dad is getting my buck mounted, by ___________ _________ of _______, ________. My four-pointer will be on my living room wall sometime in April. Not only was I lucky to get a deer that big, I had gotten a second chance at my buck. My first hunting experience will be one that I will never forget.
True story, please give me some feed back so i can improve it, it has to be sent in by 4:30 today.
(I used _____ to keep some names and places private)
Thanks a bunch!!
